How to Tune a Guitar by Ear

Tuning a guitar by ear means getting the strings in tune with each other, starting from a reliable reference and without any electronic tools. It's a skill that makes you self-sufficient anywhere, trains your ear, and shows you how standard tuning is really built. All you need is a trustworthy starting point and a little focus.

In a nutshell: start from a reference string, then fret each string at the 5th fret (the 4th between the 3rd and 2nd strings) to tune the next higher string; or use harmonics instead. To lock in to A440, you still need an external reference.

What tuning by ear means

Tuning by ear means comparing two sounds instead of reading a display. The goal is for every pair of strings to match the correct interval defined by standard EADGBE tuning: from the 6th string (the lowest) to the 1st (the highest), the notes are E, A, D, G, B, E.

There's an important distinction, though. By ear you get relative pitch: the strings sound right against each other, but the whole guitar could sit a little higher or lower than the universal reference. To be in tune in absolute terms too (that is, at A 440 Hz, the standard every other instrument plays to), you need an external starting point. More on that below.

The 5th fret method

This is the most widely used system. The idea is simple: fretting a string at the 5th fret gives you the same note as the next higher string played open. You tune the open string until the two sound identical, then move on.

You start from the 6th string, which you treat as your reference, and work down toward the higher strings:

In practice: fret the 6th string at the 5th fret, play the 5th string open, and adjust the latter until the two sounds match. When they're almost equal you'll hear a faint "beating" (a pulse that comes and goes): the closer the notes get, the slower the pulse, until it disappears when you're in tune. Repeat the same step for each row of the table.

The 3rd string exception

There's just one step that's different. To tune the 2nd string (B) you don't fret the 3rd string at the 5th fret, but at the 4th. The reason lies in how standard tuning is built: between the 3rd and 2nd strings the interval is a major third, while between every other pair it's a perfect fourth. Fretting at the 4th fret compensates for exactly that difference. It's the most common beginner mistake: always keep in mind that the 3rd string's "jump" is the only exception.

The harmonics method

Harmonics are crystal-clear notes you get by barely touching the string (without pressing it down) right above the 12th, 7th, or 5th fret, lifting your finger the moment you pick. They're especially useful because they keep ringing for a long time: you can compare two sounds while they ring together and hear the beating with great clarity, especially on the low strings where the ear struggles most.

The classic pairing is this: the 5th fret harmonic on the 6th string and the 7th fret harmonic on the 5th string produce the same note. When they're perfectly in tune, the beating disappears. The same comparison works between the 5th and 4th strings, and between the 4th and 3rd.

Careful: for the 3rd–2nd string pair, the harmonics trick doesn't line up the same way, once again because of the major third. For that zone it's more reliable to go back to the 5th (well, 4th) fret method. So think of harmonics as a great tool for the low strings, to use alongside the fret method for the high ones.

Starting from an external reference

All the methods so far tune the strings against each other: if the starting string is off, the whole guitar will be in tune with itself but not with the rest of the world. To anchor yourself to A440 you need a reliable reference note to start the 6th string from. The most common options are:

  • Another string that's already right, if you know the guitar hasn't drifted much.
  • A piano or keyboard that's in tune: find the note E and use it as the model for the 6th string.
  • An app or a sample tone on your phone that plays the notes.

Once the reference string matches the external model, you apply the 5th fret or harmonics method for the rest. That way you combine absolute accuracy with speed.

The limits of tuning by ear

Tuning by ear is valuable, but it has honest limits. It takes practice to recognize the beats, errors stack up string after string (a small inaccuracy on the 5th carries all the way to the 1st), and it gets hard in noisy environments. Plus, on its own, it never tells you whether you're really at A440.
