A reliable 12-string guitar tuner, paired with the right method, is all you need to tame an instrument with a rebellious reputation. The 12-string isn't hard because it demands a golden ear: it's hard because it carries six courses (pairs of strings) and builds up very high overall tension, which makes it keep settling while you tune it.

Why the 12-string is harder to tune
Unlike a six-string, here every "string" is actually a close-set pair, called a course. There are six courses, twelve strings in total, and that changes everything in two ways.

When you bring the first course up to pitch, the tension increases, the neck flexes slightly, and the strings you've already tuned go flat. Not all the pairs work the same way. On the four lowest courses, the added string is tuned an octave above the main one: it's a thinner string, the one that gives the 12-string its signature bright, shimmering sound. Keep this in mind when you read the tuner: on courses 6, 5, 4 and 3 the added string should show the same letter but one octave higher (E2 and E3, for example), while on courses 2 and 1 both strings should read exactly the same note.
What order to tune the 12 strings in
The right order cuts down on settling and saves you time. Always work from the lowest course to the highest, one string at a time.
- Start with course 6 (E): tune the main E2 string first, then its octave partner E3.
- Move to course 5 (A): A2 first, then A3.
- Continue with course 4 (D): D3 first, then D4.
- Then course 3 (G): G3 first, then G4. Careful here, because the G4 octave string is the thinnest and tightest on the instrument — the one that snaps most easily.
- Reach course 2 (B): both strings on the same B3.
- Finish with course 1 (E): both strings on the same E4.
When you're done, start over and recheck course by course. The first pass mostly just puts the instrument under tension; the second, and sometimes the third, is what actually gets it in tune. Always give the reference note to the main string, then match its partner to it.

On a 12-string, the priority is isolating each string cleanly. Three options work well:

Mistakes to avoid

- Plucking both strings of the course together. The tuner — and your ear — struggle to read two strings at once. Mute the one you're not tuning with a finger and work on one string at a time.
