Your guitar goes out of tune on its own because wood, metal, and hardware are all in constant motion, even when the instrument is just sitting there and you're not playing it. The tension of the six strings is considerable, and anything that shifts that balance — a change in temperature, a bit more humidity, friction that finally gives way — moves the intonation. It's not a flaw: it's physics.
In short: guitars lose their tuning from temperature and humidity swings that move the wood, from friction at the nut and bridge, from tuning machines that slip, and from neck flex. New strings are a separate case. A few simple habits cut drift down a lot.
What "going out of tune on its own" means
Tuning drift refers to the slow, silent dip you find when you pick the guitar back up after a few hours or a few days without touching it. It's different from going out of tune while you play, caused by bending and energetic strumming. Here the culprit isn't you — it's the materials resettling on their own.
The guitar, incidentally, is already an intonation compromise built on equal temperament: no string is perfectly "correct" relative to the others. That's why even a tiny shift is immediately audible on open chords, where nearby notes start to beat against each other.
Temperature and humidity: the wood is working
The number-one cause is environmental. The wood of the neck and body absorbs and releases moisture and expands or contracts with temperature. When the wood moves, string tension changes and the intonation drifts. Cold generally pulls notes flat; a very dry or very humid environment shifts them less predictably.
The neck flexing
The same movement affects the neck, which can flex slightly. Just fractions of a millimeter of extra or reduced curvature are enough to alter overall tension and pull every string out of tune together. That's why a guitar brought from warm to cold should be left to acclimate before you tune it.
Friction at the nut and bridge
Every string rests at two critical points: the nut slot and the bridge saddle. If the slot is too narrow, rough, or dirty, the string doesn't slide smoothly — it sticks. Tension builds up on one side and, at some point, the string suddenly releases: you hear it drop all at once, and you're left with that one string out of tune while the others are fine. Tuning machines that slip
The tuning machines (tuning pegs) are the last link holding the string under tension. If they're worn, have play in them, or aren't a locking type, the post can give a little under load and let the string slip. How to reduce the problem
You can't eliminate drift entirely, but you can keep it under control:
- Let the instrument acclimate. Before playing in a very different environment, let the guitar reach room temperature, ideally still in its case.
- Keep humidity stable. Avoid swings and places that are too dry or too humid; a hard case helps buffer them.
- Lubricate the nut slots. A dab of the right lubricant eliminates sudden slips from friction at the nut and bridge.
- Use quality tuning machines. Good tuners, locking ones if possible, cut down slippage and tuning stability improves right away.
- Stretch in new strings. Pull them by hand and retune several times after installing them, so you skip the worst of the break-in period.
